4D Bario Kelabit Highlands
Close to the Indonesia border in the north-eastern corner of Sarawak and dominated by Gunung Murud are the Kelabit Highlands, the highest inhabited area of Borneo. Kelabit, Murut, Sabahan, Lun Bawang and Penan people live in longhouse at an altitude of 3700ft. Wet padi farming is the main source of food, supplemented by hunting and the cultivation of fruit and vegetables for local use. Today Bario, the center of the Kelabit Highlands, consists of several longhouses and a number of individual dwellings, several shops and logging houses, schools, clinic and immigration post. Bario, which means 'wind' in the Kelabit language, a remote plateau surrounded by rolling hills, has many paths leading off into the forest, tempting one to explore further airfield.
Day 1 - Lawas/Ba Kelalan 08:00 Breakfast. 09:00am overland transfer using 4X4WD to Ba Kelalan which take about 6 hours. Arrive in the Ba Kelalan Valley around midday and proceed straight to lodging house in Ba Kelalan. Lunch at the lodge and you will have this afternoon to rest and relax. In the evening, walk around the valley and visit some of the longhouses, homes in Ba Kelalan. The tribes are Muruts and Lun Bawang. Dinner and overnight at the lodge. (B/L/D)
Day 2 - Kelabit Highlands Early breakfast today and visit the coffee and apple plantations in the valley. Today you will be impressed by the first hand experience of observing the local people skilfully making the well-known Nuba Baya - a style of packed food wrapped in leaves, and also ‘Ruti Benak’ - one type of local delicacy being prepared. Lunch, visit the salt spring and study the process of salt productions in the highlands. On the way back, visit the Apple Orchard, the only Malaysia grown apple. Sightseeing the beautiful scenery of the village with their endless promising beauty of the lifestyle of local people (B/L/D)
Day 3 - Rice Fields & Waterfalls Breakfast, take a walk through the village, rice fields and buffalo farm (laman) enjoying the fresh air until we reach the waterfall. Take a leisure time to swim and picnic lunch will be cooked in bamboo. After refreshed from a cold water swimming, a while later will walk back to Apple Lodge. Afternoon will be at your own leisure as you can take your time relaxing and reading while enjoying the 24 hours coffee and tea making facilities at the lodge. (B/L/D)
Day 4 - Ba Kelalan Breakfast at the lodge, free at leisure, transfer to Airport (B)
