5D4N Bario Kelabit Highlands
Ex-Lawas, Sarawak
Tour Code : PA/046/BARIO (5D)

Close to the Indonesia border in the north-eastern corner of Sarawak and dominated by Gunung Murud are the Kelabit Highlands, the highest inhabited area of Borneo. Kelabit, Murut, Sabahan, Lun Bawang and Penan people live in longhouse at an altitude of 3700ft. Wet padi farming is the main source of food, supplemented by hunting and the cultivation of fruit and vegetables for local use. Today Bario, the center of the Kelabit Highlands, consists of several longhouses and a number of individual dwellings, several shops and logging houses, schools, clinic and immigration post. Bario, which means 'wind' in the Kelabit language, a remote plateau surrounded by rolling hills, has many paths leading off into the forest, tempting one to explore further airfield.

Day 1 - Lawas/Ba Kelalan 08:00 Breakfast. 09:00am overland transfer using 4X4WD to Bakelalan which take about 6 hours. Arrive in the Ba Kelalan Valley around midday and proceed straight to lodging house in Ba Kelalan. Lunch at the lodge and have this afternoon to rest and relax. In the evening, walk around the valley and visit some of the longhouses, homes in Ba Kelalan. The tribes are Muruts and Lun Bawang. Dinner and overnight at the lodge. (B/L/D)

This shelter is the mid-point journey to cross over to Indonesia and the site used to be inhabited by the Kelabits (now move to Pa’Ukat and Pa’Lungan) over 50 years ago during the Japanese occupation of Sarawak (B/L/D)

Day 3 - Long Repung/Pa Lungan/Bario Breakfast, pack and get ready to go to Pa’Lungan which take about 3 hours. Lunch at Pa’Lungan.
