5D4N Bario Kelabit Highlands

Close to the Indonesia border in the north-eastern corner of Sarawak and
dominated by Gunung Murud are the Kelabit Highlands, the highest inhabited
area of Borneo. Kelabit, Murut, Sabahan, Lun Bawang and Penan people live
in longhouse at an altitude of 3700ft. Wet padi farming is the main source
of food, supplemented by hunting and the cultivation of fruit and
vegetables for local use. Today Bario, the center of the Kelabit
Highlands, consists of several longhouses and a number of individual
dwellings, several shops and logging houses, schools, clinic and
immigration post. Bario, which means 'wind' in the Kelabit language, a
remote plateau surrounded by rolling hills, has many paths leading off
into the forest, tempting one to explore further airfield.
Day 1 -
Lawas/Ba
Kelalan
08:00 Breakfast. 09:00am overland transfer using 4X4WD to Bakelalan which
take about 6 hours.
Arrive in the Ba
Kelalan
Valley around midday and proceed straight to lodging house in Ba
Kelalan. Lunch at the lodge and have this afternoon to rest
and relax. In the evening, walk around the valley and visit some
of the longhouses, homes in Ba
Kelalan.
The tribes are Muruts and Lun Bawang. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 2 -
Ba Kelalan/Pa Rupai/Long Repung
Early breakfast today and visit the coffee and apple plantations in the
valley. Trek about 2 hours from Ba
Kelalan
to Pa Rupai. Have lunch at local canteen. Continue trekking about 4
hours to Long Repung, overnight at jungle shelter. This shelter is the
mid-point journey to cross over to Indonesia and the site used to
be inhabited by the Kelabits (now move to Pa’Ukat and Pa’Lungan) over 50
years ago during the Japanese occupation of Sarawak (B/L/D)
Day 3 -
Long Repung/Pa Lungan/Bario
Breakfast, pack and get ready to go to Pa’Lungan which take about 3 hours.
Lunch at Pa’Lungan. After lunch trek time will be 3 hours (10km) over one
small hill (Ka’an Blulu Barit) from Pa’Ukat where we will arrive some time
in the late afternoon. Settle in at D’Plateau Lodge which your guide is
preparing dinner (B/L/D)
Day 4 -
Bario Valley
Breakfast at the lodge, visit the Ulung Palang and Bario Asal longhouses
inhabited by the Kelabit tribe in the Bario Valley. Overnight at local
lodge. (B/L/D)
Day 5 -
Bario/Miri
Breakfast at the lodge, free at leisure, transfer to Bario Airport for
your rural flight to Miri, arrive Miri Airport and have your connecting
flight. (B)
