promontory of Nerus River, once a country retreat of the late Sultan Zainal
Abidin III of Terengganu (1881-1918). THe private residence of Tengku Ismail
bin Tengku Su is now open to paying guests who would like to experience the
courtly living of Terengganu's past.
Pura Tanjung Sabtu is a
complex comprising several traditional Terengganu houses and palaces that age
about 100 to almost 200 years old, situated on a sprawling 14-acre land. The
remarkably ambitious project, which began in 1992, is owned and managed by
Tengku Ismail bin Tengku Su, the second cousin of the current Sultan of
Terengganu. His attempt in preserving Terengganu’s traditional built heritage
is highly lauded and has been featured in numerous international architectural
magazines. The house has been receiving guests continuously since 1995 and
Tengku Ismail regularly holds lunches of local traditional Malay fare. The
interiors of the houses are graced with age old crafts and historical
artefacts, turning the whole place into a living museum. Tengku Ismail also
designs and produces outstanding songket for Malaysian royalties and
dignitaries. Pura Tanjung Sabtu offers a homestay opportunity for guests to
