The history of Mengalum Island has long been associated with voyaging of Ferdinand Magellan in Asian waters during 16th century. The link is tied to a large metal anchor located in the south-western corner of the island near the shoreline. Although there is no recorded documentation as to when and how the anchor was placed on the island, many people, including local fishermen, believe that the anchor is from Magellan's or one of his fleet vessels. However, to this date, no one has been able to confirm conclusively its origin, age and how or why it was placed on Mengalum Island. What is known is that the mystery anchor has the power to draw people to the island to see it first hand.

Mengalum Island is just under 1,000 acres/ 405 hectares in size and is in the form of an irregular circle. At its widest points, the island's north-south width is 1.4 miles/ 2.2 kilometers and the east-west width is 1.6 miles/ 2.5 kilometers. Part of the island of some 231.75 acres of land has being designated as government wildlife reserved for bird sanctuary.

Mengalum Island is situated in the South China Sea 35 statute miles (30.4 nautical miles) / 56 kilometers northwest of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah’s capital city. Access to Mengalum Island will be by high speed catamaran. The departure point will be at the Sutera Harbour Marina, which is located close to Kota Kinabalu Central Business District, 5 kilometers from the city's international airport terminal.
